The idea that Candace was so uncomfortable being near Evan that she would quit her job over it bothered him. A lot. Why couldn’t things stay the way they were? Why couldn’t they just work together, and hang out sometimes, and be friends? They could flirt, even. He liked flirting.

Why did it have to be all or nothing? Why should he be in this position where he had to declare his love for her or lose a highly competent manager?

“This is about that thing you said to me.” Of course it was. He felt like an idiot having to have it spelled out for him.

Candace pinched the bridge of her nose between her fingers, her eyes closed. “If I could turn back time and unsay it, believe me, I would.”

He didn’t want her to unsay it, though. He’d liked it. He liked knowing she had feelings for him. He just wished he weren’t expected to respond to those feelings.

“Well, you can’t unsay it.”

“I’m painfully aware of that.”

“Look. If you stay, I’ll … I promise I’ll be completely professional. We can pretend you never said what you said. We can just keep it all work-related. Okay? Can we do that?”

“No!” She sprang up out of her chair, her hands clenched at her sides. “No, Evan. I don’t want things between us to be professional! I thought I made that clear! I don’t … Being around you every day and having things stay professional is unbearable! It’s … it’s impossible, and I won’t do it anymore!”

Her eyes were getting shiny and red, and he got up from his chair and went to her.

He put his hands on her shoulders and bent down a little so he could look squarely into her eyes. “Hey. Hey, it’s okay. Candace, shh.”

Nix was right, he was an idiot. She was lovely and warm-hearted and smart and funny, and she loved him. What the hell was he doing? Why was he pushing her away? Maybe if he just let it happen. Maybe if he gave it a chance.

He wanted to make the tears go away. He wanted to make her pain go away. And he had the power to do that, didn’t he? If he’d caused it, he could fix it.

He reached out and ran a fingertip down her cheek, and her breath stopped. Everything stopped.

“Evan …”

“You said you love me.”

“I did. I …”

Whatever she was going to say next was lost as he kissed her.
